Insights into the Chinese education system
The Chinese education system is divided into Elementary, Middle School (lower Secondary) and High School. Before children attend Elementary School parents have the option to enroll their children in kindergarten. Although it is not compulsory, a lot of children attend kindergarten to prepare them for Primary School. Children from the age of 3 can enroll in kindergarten. After kindergarten they will attend Primary School.
Primary school
In China Primary School is often referred to as Elementary School. Elementary is divided into grade 1 – 6 and is compulsory for all children. The Law on Nine-Year Compulsory Education took effect in 1986 and guarantees that children receive 9 years of education. The curriculum consists of Mandarin Chinese, math, social studies, nature, Physical Education, Ideology and Morality, Music. Fine arts and labor studies. Elementary school is attended by children between the ages of 6 and 12.
Secondary school
In China Secondary School is divided into Middle School (Lower Secondary, Chuzhong) and High School (Higher Secondary). Students between the ages of 12-15 attend Middle School and it covers grades 7 – 9. The curriculum consists of Mandarin Chinese, Math, English, Science, History, Politics. Geography, Physical Education and music. Some schools offer subjects such as Sociology and music.
High School is attended by students between the ages 15 – 18 and covers grades 10-12. The curriculum consists of Mandarin Chinese, foreign languages (English, Japanese, Russian etc.), math, Ideology and Politics, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Sports and health, Art and technology.
