Insights into the Portguese education system

The Portuguese school system is divided into Pre-School, Primary School and Secondary School. School is mandatory for children between the ages 6 and 18. Like other countries before children get enrolled in Primary School parents can enroll them in Pre-school which is optional. Pre-school is for children between the ages of three and 6 years old.

Primary school

Primary education in Portugal is divided into basic first stage (Ensino Básico – 1 Ciclo) and basic second stage (Ensino Básico – 2 Ciclo). Ensino Básico – 1 Ciclo lasts four years while Ensino Básico – 2 Ciclo lasts 2 years. The curriculum consists of Portuguese, Math, Science, History, Geography, Social Studies and English (which is mandatory). After completing Primary School students will attend Middle School.

Secondary school

Secondary School in Portugal is divided into Middle School ( Ensino Básico – 3 Ciclo) and High School (Escola Secundária). Ensino Básico – 3 Ciclo lasts three years and is attended by students aged 12-15. The curriculum consists of Portuguese, Math, English (mandatory), Natural sciences, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography and Physical Education. Students also must choose a second foreign language.

Just like Middle School Escola Secundária lasts three years and is attended by students aged 15-18. In the 9th grade students can choose an academic or practical program. The main curriculum consists of Portuguese, Math, Philosophy, History, Geography, Foreign Language and Physical Education. Apart from the main subjects, students will follow subjects that fit their chosen program.
